Oh dang.

RECIPE

Why this particular panna cotta?  Well, we think it’s perfectly a-little-bit-sweet and exactly the right amount of buttermilk-tangy.  Also, we like the yield.  A lot of recipes make panna cotta for 6 or 8, but with such a simple recipe, we can’t think of any reason it shouldn’t be enjoyed with just your little family or a few close friends.

Sweet photos by Sarah Derer.

The Paloma is a natural choice for citrus lovers like us. It's a great year-round cocktail, too: refreshing in the warmer months, a reminder of sunnier days when the weather is miserable. We got to thinking about how much more we enjoy them in the company of others and set out to create a tequila and grapefruit-based punch.

Better brewing with Emma Christensen

Make what you drink, and you'll develop a whole new appreciation for your beverages. And it's easier than you think, thanks to this cookbook author.

INTERVIEW

Smitten with the process of fermentation and hoping to bring homebrew to the masses' kitchens, Emma Christensen wrote a book: True Brews, a beginner's guide to making fermented beverages. But she says she had another book in mind before she started True Brews. That book became Brew Better Beer: Learn (and Break) the Rules for Making Ales, Porters, Stouts, Lagers, and Morethe most accessible guide to home brewing we've ever read.

It's not that this recipe is complicated or even time-consuming. But it does require some skill to fry root vegetables until they're perfectly crisp. And that requires a mandolin for cutting the vegetables the right thickness. Plus, if you've never been in a homebrew shop, now's your chance, because you're not going to find hop pellets anywhere else. But we hope you find that inspiring, not challenging.
